Gutters: what regular maintenance actually prevents
Clogged gutters are one of the more common, avoidable causes of home water damage.

Gutters that overflow don't just make a mess along the foundation — over time that water works into the soil right next to the house, which is exactly where you don't want standing water to collect.
Debris buildup is the most common issue in the Hudson Valley given how many properties sit under mature trees. A gutter clogged with leaves in the fall can freeze solid in winter, and that ice load is heavy enough to pull hangers loose from the fascia.
A twice-a-year cleaning, typically in late spring and again after leaf drop, catches most problems before they become structural. It's also the easiest time to spot a sagging section or a loose downspout while you're already up there looking.
If you notice water marks on the siding below a gutter joint, that's usually a seal that's failed rather than a clog, and it's worth addressing before the next heavy rain.
