Where to put a shed on your property (and when it needs a permit)

Shed placement is more regulated than most homeowners expect — setbacks and size thresholds vary by town.

Backyard shed assembly and siting on a Hudson Valley property

Before ordering a shed kit or scheduling assembly, it's worth checking your town's setback requirements from property lines, since these vary significantly across Hudson Valley municipalities.

Many towns exempt small sheds under a certain square footage from permitting entirely, but larger sheds, or ones with a permanent foundation, often cross into permit territory.

Beyond the legal side, siting also matters for drainage and access — a shed placed in a low spot in the yard will collect water at the base over time, and a shed placed too close to a fence line can make future fence repairs harder.

Once placement and permitting (if needed) are settled, assembly itself is usually the quick part, especially if the base is properly leveled ahead of time.
